Almost everything made from scratch, with every supplier within 21 miles. The kitchen forages wild garlic, mushrooms and damsons from the surrounding hills. Menus change daily with the harvest, and the Sunday roast is worth the drive.

The Mini Mill stone oven turns out woodfire pizza named for the hills around you: Kinder Scout, Mam Tor, Lantern Pike. We light it when the weather is with us, and there’s cover overhead once it is.

The wheel still stands
An 18th-century mill at the end of the village lane, powered for generations by the brook that still runs past the door. In 1930 a catastrophic flood burst its banks, destroyed the original wheel, and took the life of the landlord, John Ollerenshaw.
The 35-foot replica, raised in the early 1990s, stands over Rowarth Brook in his memory. For years the building was the village post office, too. The original safe and post box are still here at the bar, where you now take your pint.
Grade II listed since 1977. Three centuries, under one roof.

11 walking routes from 1 to 18 miles and 5 cycling routes from 17 to 28 miles, all from the door. Gentle loops along Rowarth Brook for families; the Great Ridge and Kinder Scout for serious hikers.
